What is Really Important for Kinders?

I wonder what the diagnosis rate of ADHD is here?

  1. Hi Kelly-I am in the West Hartford Cohort and was surfing the blogs.Thank you for posting this youtube.I find it interesting how other countries view kindergarten.I am a kindergarten teacher and am lucky to work in a private school that allows for as much outdoor time as I need.Of course, we don't spend the day outside but I love the idea! Will our state or country ever realize how important it is for our children to learn about their environment through play?

  2. Agreed Mari Beth. Play is such a vital component to early childhood education and is something I feel is being lost in the push for more academics too soon. Without play children don't learn how to pretend and think outside the box, children don't learn to share, children don't learn to cooperate, children don't learn to construct and build, children don't learn to follow the directions of a game. These are life lessons that they will need and utilize forever and are being swept under the rug. If we want to build and develop effective and successful citizens out of our children then we must build a strong foundation that begins with developmentally appropriate activities including appropriate time for play.
